Important Announcement Regarding Fall Programs

A message from the North Plainfield Department of Parks and Recreation:

Due to low enrollment in our fall sports programs (Soccer, Archery, Flag Football, Fusion Football, and Cheerleading) and our desire to form enough teams to make leagues at the different age levels, the Recreation Directors decided to extend the deadline for registration to this past Saturday, August 31.   We publicized this extension of our registration deadline with notices on our electronic sign, information posted on Facebook and our Recreation Website, and through voicemails and text messages sent to via the borough’s phone system.  This allowed families to register much later than we wanted (registrations were originally held for several days in June).  However, this registration extension causes significant consequences for all of the programs, which we were trying to avoid.   Extending the registration forces us to cancel the soccer draft sessions that we typically have for each league (3rd grade and up), since holding the drafts will delay the start of our season.   Thus, teams will be picked by the Directors and the coaches this Saturday, September 7th, without a draft. Every effort will still be made to keep the teams evenly balanced in terms of skills/experience.  Extending the registration also means that we were forced to delay ordering uniforms as we need players’ sizes and the final number of registered players before uniforms can be ordered.   Additionally, extending the registration will likely delay the start of the season.  Cancelling the draft, delaying the ordering of uniforms, and therefore, delaying the start of the fall season are all things that we, as directors, were definitely trying to avoid. However, when we did not get enough registrations in June and we extended the registration dates, these are the unfortunate consequences.

Soccer dates to be aware of:
Families of Kindergarten, first, and second grade players will be contacted by  their coaches between September 17th and 20thParents, PLEASE be sure to listen to your voicemail messages on all of your devices during that week so that you get this information.  The soccer season for grade K, 1, and 2 will begin on Saturday September 21st at Lower Krausche field, but you will hear from your child’s coach with more information before that.

Families of 3rd through 8th grade soccer players will be contacted by their coaches during the week of September 8th to get their practice schedules.  Parents, PLEASE be sure to listen to your voicemail messages on all of your devices during that week so that you get this information. Games will begin on Saturday, September 28th and coaches will give you the game schedules and uniforms prior to that.  The soccer clinic will be held on Sunday, September 29th at 1:00 pm at Krausche field with the high school soccer coaches and players.

Archery dates to be aware of:
The archery safety session for 3rd through 8th grade participants will be held on Tuesday, September 17th at 6:45 pm at West End School.  All participants from all grades will attend the same safety session and must attend the session before the program begins.  The next archery session for 3rd to 8th graders will be on Wednesday September 25th with 3rd, 4th, 5th graders meeting from 6:45 to 7:45 pm and 6th, 7th, 8th graders  meeting from 8:00 to 9:00 pm at West End School.  The youth archery program will continue on Wednesdays.  Adult Archery will take place on Tuesdays beginning on Tuesday September 24th at 7:00 pm.  Both youth and adult archers will be given their t-shirts at the beginning of the season.

Information about Football and Cheer:
NP Rec will have co-ed flag football teams for grades Kindergarten through fifth grade.  If you registered your child for this, you will be called soon about the start of that program.  Games will be held on Sunday afternoons and will all be held in North Plainfield will just North Plainfield youth.
Unfortunately, we only had 6 people (6th, 7th, and 8th graders) register for fusion football and, therefore, we will NOT be having a fusion football team this year. Those who registered their children for Fusion Football will be contacted to determine which of the following choices they would like:
1. get a refund for their registration fee.
2. use their registration fee to enroll in soccer or archery if not already registered for one of those.
3. establish a credit for registration in a winter sport (basketball or wrestling).

We will be having a cheerleading program for grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. These children will cheer for the flag football team.   We will likely not be having a cheer program for grades 6,7, and 8 as we also had only 6 registrants for that team.  These families will be contacted with the same choices listed above regarding registration fees or they may cheer with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders for our flag football.

While the Directors of North Plainfield Recreation thank you for your patience we also encourage you to sign up for future programs on the official registration dates offered to avoid delays in starting our programs.  We thank those families who did, in fact, register their children in June for our fall sports.

If you have any questions or concerns about the above information, or about any of our programs, we strongly encourage you to contact us directly to get the most accurate information and to ensure that we hear your concerns.   While Facebook is quite useful, at times information shared by well-meaning citizens may not be  accurate.  Also, it is our general policy to NOT respond to questions, complaints, or concerns posted there.  But we are happy to answer any of your questions or hear your concerns directly if you call us (908) 756-0247 or email one or all of us at [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], as we feel that direct, open communication is more effective.
